Ready to start a business? Learn the legal essentials every teen entrepreneur needs — from choosing a business structure and writing contracts to understanding taxes, liability, and consumer protection law.
Starting a business is exciting, but it comes with legal responsibilities that can make or break your venture. This camp gives you the practical legal knowledge every teen entrepreneur needs before launching.
You’ll start with business entity formation. Should you operate as a sole proprietorship, form an LLC, create a partnership, or incorporate? Each structure offers different levels of liability protection, has different tax implications, and requires different formation steps. You’ll learn the pros and cons of each so you can make an informed decision.
Contracts are the foundation of every business relationship. You’ll learn how to draft and understand basic business contracts, identify essential terms, understand the statute of frauds (which requires certain contracts to be in writing), and avoid common pitfalls that trip up new business owners.
Protecting your intellectual property is critical from day one. You’ll study trademark registration for your business name and logo, copyright protection for your original content, and trade secret law for proprietary processes and information.
Finally, if your business grows enough to hire people, you need to understand employment law. You’ll learn the legal difference between hiring an employee and using an independent contractor, study wage and hour requirements under the Fair Labor Standards Act, and learn about child labor restrictions that specifically affect teen business owners.
