Sports and esports are massive industries governed by a complex web of legal rules. Whether you’re an athlete, a gamer, or just a fan, this camp shows you the law behind the competition.

You’ll start with Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) rights, one of the biggest recent changes in sports law. Following NCAA v. Alston, college athletes can now profit from their identity. You’ll learn how this shift happened, what rules still apply, and how NIL deals actually work.

Contract law is the backbone of professional sports. You’ll study the key terms in player agreements — guaranteed money, performance bonuses, morals clauses, and termination provisions — and learn how to read and evaluate these deals.

Teams invest heavily in protecting their brands. You’ll explore trademark law as it applies to team names, logos, and color schemes, and examine the tension between intellectual property enforcement and fan-created content.

Finally, Esports raises new legal questions. You’ll explore whether professional gamers are employees or independent contractors — a classification that dramatically affects their legal rights — and study how employment law applies to this growing industry.
