The Bill of Rights is the foundation of individual liberty in America, but most people — including most adults — don’t fully understand what these amendments actually protect. This camp breaks down the key amendments and shows you how they work in practice.

You’ll start with the First Amendment and freedom of speech. You’ll learn that not all speech is protected — true threats, incitement to imminent lawless action, fighting words, and obscenity fall outside the First Amendment — and study why courts created these categories.

The Second Amendment and the right to bear arms gets careful treatment. You’ll study District of Columbia v. Heller, where the Supreme Court confirmed an individual right to firearm ownership, and examine what kinds of government regulations the Constitution permits.

Under the Fifth Amendment, you can’t be forced to incriminate yourself. You’ll study Miranda v. Arizona, learn when police are required to read you your rights, and understand the consequences of invoking or waiving those rights.

Finally, the Eighth Amendment prohibits cruel and unusual punishment. You’ll examine proportionality analysis and study landmark juvenile sentencing cases — Roper v. Simmons (no death penalty for juveniles) and Miller v. Alabama (no mandatory life without parole for juveniles) — that directly affect people your age.
