Brand deals, sponsorships, and content licensing all run on contracts. Learn the legal fundamentals every creator needs — from what makes a deal enforceable to what happens when it falls apart.
If you’ve ever dreamed of being a content creator, influencer, or entertainer, this camp gives you the legal knowledge you’ll need to protect yourself and your work. The entertainment and creator economy runs on contracts, and understanding them is the difference between building a career and getting taken advantage of.
You’ll start with the elements of a valid contract: offer, acceptance, consideration, capacity, and legality. You’ll apply these basics to real-world brand deals and sponsorship agreements so you can spot when a deal is legally binding and when it’s not.
Because this camp is built for teens, you’ll spend significant time on the capacity of minors to contract. Under the law, contracts signed by minors are generally voidable — meaning the minor can walk away. But there are important exceptions, including contracts for necessaries and entertainment contracts approved under Coogan’s Law (the statute originally designed to protect child actors’ earnings). You’ll learn exactly how these rules work.
Non-compete and exclusivity clauses are common in influencer agreements. A brand might require you not to promote any competing products for months or even years. You’ll learn how courts evaluate whether these restrictions are reasonable and enforceable, and how the rules vary by state.
Finally, you’ll cover breach of contract — what happens when one side doesn’t hold up their end of the deal — and the remedies available, including damages and specific performance.
